MAKE TODAY THE BEST DAY EVER FOR YOURSELF AND SOMEONE ELSE!

Welcome to the 2014 - 2015 school year!.

Jefferson School this year, will will continue to strive for outstanding success and retool our teaching practices to meet the growing demands of the world.  Two years ago year we began this shift by adopting and implementing the new Common Core State Standards.  This year our journey continues, as we push our practices further by engaging in learning centered around our 2014-2015 theme.

“We Envision the Future.....and we know we make a difference!”

The Summit elementary schools have earned a reputation as providing a rigorous and meaningful language arts program due to our collaboration with Columbia University's Teacher's College, our use of the reading and writing workshop model and our in depth study of literacy learning.  As you may know, we recently adopted the new math program appropriately titled, Envision Math.  We are excited to use this opportunity to apply our understandings of effective literacy learning and teaching to deepen our practices in mathematics instruction so our students can rethink math as a meaning-based, interconnected discipline in which they can all achieve.  We understand that we have to provide our young mathematicians with authentic achievements with suitable challenges so that our students can learn to cherish the reward of competence, effort and perseverance.  Research tells us that determination and grit are essential elements of future success so as we envision our studentsí futures, we want to set them up to achieve their own hopes and dreams.  Jefferson School Staff value intelligence but we understand that the chemistry of the human brain allows effort and hard work to push boundaries and if students, teachers and parents believe that more is possible, and we study, question, ponder, grapple with and connect with difficult concepts, we can train our brains to build capacity.  So this year we plan to continue to study the brain, hone our best literacy practices and delve further into the pedagogy of mathematics.  We are excited to draw from our existing studies and grow new possibilities for all our learners as “we envision our future and we know we make a difference!”

Jefferson School enjoys a national reputation for educational excellence, having been honored by the U.S. Department of Education as a Blue Ribbon School. Our students flourish in a stimulating academic environment that emphasizes literature-based language strategies, process writing, problem solving, critical thinking, manipulative math experiences, and hands-on science and computer instruction.

The parents are a critical ingredient of our school's success as they participate in the teaching/learning process and as enthusiastic supporters of the Parent Teacher Organization. The PTO provides direct support for many of the exciting activities listed below.  Please feel free to visit the Jefferson PTO website at: http://www.jeffersonschoolpto.com/
