MAKE TODAY THE BEST DAY EVER FOR YOURSELF AND SOMEONE ELSE!
Welcome to the start of the 2012-2013 school year.Â
As our children are central to our work and all that we do here at jefferson school, they inspire our school theme for the 2012-2013 academic year, “At the Core, It’s All About Kids.”Â
Through this theme, one of our goals will be to learn about the newly adopted CommonCore State Standards. These standards were written by national educators and adopted by each state across the country in an effort to provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. It is the hope of these educators that out of these core standards will come citizens who are best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy. At Jefferson School, we will embrace these standards whole-heartedly, as we have always believed in providing a depth of instruction to prepare our students to be active and successful learners and leaders.Â
Although these newly adopted standards will provide a roadmap for our teachers, they do not dictate the way in which we deliver our instruction. Therefore, we plan to continue with the research-based cutting edge instructional practices, which we have employed in the past.
As a “core” is a central and often fundamental part of something, it is important to know that Jefferson School chose our theme not because these standards will be the core of our work (although they will), but rather because we plan to keep our focus on our students as the center of our teaching, modeling and decision making. You see, excellent teachers understand that we teach kids, not curriculum – and that – “At the Core, It’s All About Kids.”
Jefferson School enjoys a national reputation for educational excellence, having been honored by the U.S. Department of Education as a Blue Ribbon School. Our students flourish in a stimulating academic environment that emphasizes literature-based language strategies, process writing, problem solving, critical thinking, manipulative math experiences, and hands-on science and computer instruction.
The parents are a critical ingredient of our school's success as they participate in the teaching/learning process and as enthusiastic supporters of the Parent Teacher Organization. The PTO provides direct support for many of the exciting activities listed below.
